El Asadero Colombiano is a straightforward, no-frills Colombian restaurant tucked into Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood along North Central Avenue. It’s the kind of spot where the aroma of meats grilling over charcoal drifts out onto the street, drawing the attention of passersby. This makes it a particularly appealing stop for anyone craving authentic Colombian flavors served in a casual setting.

The interior itself is modest in size, but there’s some additional seating just beyond the main dining room that opens up the space. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious—a place locals come to for reliably hearty meals rather than elegant dining. On weekends, the place fills up, signaling its popularity, but weekdays tend to be quieter, making lunch visits easy and comfortable.

The menu offers a wide range of Colombian classics, from empanadas and arepas to larger lunch specials featuring grilled steak, rotisserie chicken, or a mix of meats. The Bandeja Paisa, a platter loaded with steak, chicharrones, sausage, and traditional sides like fried plantains and arepas, stands out as a satisfying option for those wanting to dive into the variety of flavors Colombia is known for. Portions tend to be generous, combining both familiar and more adventurous elements like crispy whole rotisserie chicken cooked over charcoal and the option of traditional soups such as mondongo. Prices are reasonable, making it a great spot for everyday lunches or casual dinners.

Service here is noted for being unpretentious and attentive, adding to the down-to-earth neighborhood vibe. Many diners come for the chicken and steak specials, praising their seasoning and tenderness, while the empanadas and cheese-filled arepas make good starters or snacks to share. It’s common to see folks stopping by for a quick lunch during the week, but the charcoal grilling aroma and friendly staff encourage lingering over a leisurely meal.

Best suited for anyone interested in authentic Colombian home-style cooking without fuss, El Asadero Colombiano works well for single diners, groups, or families looking to enjoy straightforward Latin American flavors in a familiar environment. Those who appreciate smoky grilled meats and traditional accompaniments will be at home here. For a quieter experience, weekdays are ideal; weekends offer a livelier, bustling crowd reflecting its role as a local favorite.

The place looks small but there are extra space/tables on the other side. The place is not full on a Saturday. The food is pretty good. We ordered Bandeja Paisa which is the steak, chicharonnes and sausage with different sides like arepas, friend plantain. The meats were very tasty and tender. I love the chicharonnes. I love the sides especially the arepas. The waiter is very nice, he gave us recommendations. The food also came out fast. This is a place. Their lunch is affordable $12 and we were able to order it during dinner. The entree are about $25++ but big servings. This is a Colombian resto we could go back to.

About six months ago, we were driving north on Central and came to stop at the Lawrence Ave stop light. As we waited for the light to change, we were treated to a wonderfully savory smell of a meat grilling on an open flame. At first, I thought it was backyard BBQ but then realized it was coming from the corner restaurant El Asadero Colombiano. Last week, we made it back there to try it. What a find! The waitstaff was friendly and patient with our English and broken Spanish. One of my dinner companions ordered the Morcilla Columbiana (blood sausage) as an appetizer. I was hesitant, but it turns out we have a very similar dish in Polish food called Kishka. My husband and I split the Bandeja Paisa plate - charbroiled steak, Sausage (chorizo), pork skin (chicharrón), egg, sweet plantain, fried plantain, corn pancake, avocado, and white rice. My other dining partner ordered Mojarra Frita - whole fried silver fish. I never heard of silver fish, but it was light and flaky. It is served whole so it may put off some and you have to be careful with the bones as you have to de-bone it. Friendly diners from a neighboring table suggested we come back for the Pechuga al Allijo (chicken breast with garlic). Another friendly neighboring table told us how they have been coming here for years. Everyone was so friendly and the food was so good we have to return! The only caution is I ordered a Coke, I am so used to the free refills, but this restaurant only servers cans @ $2.50 each. We added $10 to our bill with just soda pop!

Food was delicious. The #15 platter had a great variety. I haven't been to many places that have a whole rabbit, BTW it was crispy n to much to eat with all the sides. Beef empanada eat better than chicken. Would go back to try other items.

Nothing fancy . Average restaurant . But if you like good food ...here is the place. Plenty is their second name . The steak are big , cheese arepas are suculent, the chicken is flavorful . Good seasoning and good prices on all their food. Yes my favorite colombian spot in the North side of the city. The waiter are super nice and attentive . Beware is packed on the weekends.

Very good rotisserie chicken and sides. Rice and beans were very good and large portions for the price! I really like their green salsa and use tons of it while eating the chicken. I’d recommend getting extra. Empanadas were solid too, the beef was better than the chicken though. Very fast service.

excellent authentic colombian food — what a treat. the empanadas were delicious, we liked the beef ones the best. the lunch specials are great value — the grilled chicken is generous and marinated. the juices are very good as well. it’s a bit warm in the restaurant in the summer. the arepas are nearly totally queso - very rich. we will be back for sure
